Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounces ziti pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ yellow onion (diced)
  • 1 bell pepper (diced)
  • 15 ounces diced tomatoes (drained)
  • 1 pound chicken sausage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 (24-ounce) jars marinara sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat olive oil and sauté diced onions and bell pepper until softened, about 2-3 minutes. Add chicken sausage and ground beef, cooking until browned and no pink remains; drain excess grease.
  3. Stir in marinara sauce, drained diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well and let simmer before adding cooked ziti pasta until evenly coated.
  4. In a small mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese and egg until smooth.
  5. In a 9×13 casserole dish, layer the meat sauce/pasta mixture followed by a thin layer of ricotta mixture; repeat twice more. Finish with another layer of pasta on top.
  6. Sprinkle mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-30 minutes; remove foil and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
